- The History and Science Behind National Love Your Pet Day
Observed annually on February 20, National Love Your Pet Day celebrates the loving bond between humans and their animal companions. From a tranquil goldfish swimming in a small bowl to a noble Great Dane standing tall, pets have enriched our lives throughout history. Archaeological evidence shows that dogs were buried alongside humans at least 14,000 years ago . Pets served many roles in ancient civilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Egyptians valued cats for their ability to control pests, while Romans kept small dogs as loyal companions and status symbols. Pet ownership became increasingly common among the middle class during the 18th and 19th centuries . Society began to place greater importance on the emotional connections between humans and animals, making pets regarded as cherished household members. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association , in 2024, 45.5% of U.S. households owned dogs, while 32.1% owned cats. The National Institutes of Health finds that owning a pet can significantly alleviate feelings of depression and loneliness . Engaging with our pets helps lower stress and blood pressure and boosts oxytocin levels , the hormone associated with bonding and affection. Additionally, service animals and therapy pets provide companionship and assist individuals with physical disabilities and mental health challenges. The origins of National Love Your Pet Day are not entirely clear, but some sources credit pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige with its establishment in 2006. Regardless of its beginnings, the holiday has gained widespread recognition across the nation. Pet owners celebrate by sharing heartwarming stories and photos, often using hashtags such as #NationalLoveYourPetDay and #LoveYourPet. To honor this National Love Your Pet Day, consider the following: Engaging in Extra Playtime – Stimulating pets through exercise and interactive toys supports their mental and physical health. Providing Special Treats – A well-balanced diet is essential, but an occasional pet-safe treat can be a delightful reward. Pampering with Grooming and Care – Regular grooming contributes to hygiene and overall health. Documenting Their Moments – Photography captures the cherished memories of life with pets. Giving Back to Animal Welfare – Donating to shelters or adopting animals to provide love and positive outcomes. Keeping Them Healthy – The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) emphasizes the importance of regular veterinary care, a balanced diet, vaccinations, and proper exercise to assist pets in living long, healthy lives.
- Mail Carrier Safely Delivers Rottweiler
A mail carrier in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, sprang into action to save an adult male Rottweiler trapped in an icy creek. Steve Mull, a U.S. Postal Service employee, noticed the dog struggling in a creek while on his morning route. Photo Credit: Highspire Police Department The distressed dog's hind legs were pinned under the ice. Mull entered the freezing water, pulling the dog to safety. Mull expressed an understanding of the challenges of the recent inclement weather, stating, " I know what it's like on these cold days. Compassion took over ." Mull delivered the dog to the Highspire Police Department , where the officers provided blankets, water, and treats for the dog, who they named "Bud." To locate Bud's owner, the police shared his information with the public. The owner was found , but worries about Bud's health and well-being prompted an inquiry into potential animal abuse and neglect . As a result, the Highspire Police Department carried out a search warrant and seized Bud to ensure he received veterinary care. Mull reflected on his part in Bud's recovery, saying, " My mom always told me to take care of all creatures. "

- Animal Shelter Consumed by Palisades Fire, Ponies Saved Just in Time
On January 8th, 2025, Philozoia Animal Rescue , located in Santa Monica, found itself directly in the path of the Palisades fire . The California rescue, which primarily cares for dogs, had already evacuated 38 dogs and a pig earlier that day. However, two ponies remained stranded as flames encroached upon the property. In Defense of Animals shared on its Facebook page that board member Sammy Zablen and a team of animal rescuers "braved rockslides, fire debris, and dangerous trails to evacuate two ponies from a fire-threatened property." What was anticipated to be a 20-minute drive became a difficult three-hour trek, as the roads were blocked by downed trees, rockslides, and debris from the fire, causing delays in their arrival. Once they reached the site, rescuers found that the ponies' corral had been damaged, and the animals were missing. A tense 30-minute search ensued. Thankfully, the rescuers eventually located the ponies and safely reunited them with their caretakers. Photo courtesy of In Defense of Animals The blaze ravaged Philozoia's rescue center, and two dogs remain unaccounted for, even though most of the animals were evacuated successfully. At this point, the organization’s main focus is on reconstructing the facility and locating homes for the displaced animals, which includes several older dogs. Apart from Philozoia, other individuals and organizations have come forward to assist animals affected by the California wildfires. Los Angeles veterinarian Dr. Annie Harvilicz shared on CBS New Mornings that she has provided shelter for over 40 animals , including dogs, cats, and even a rabbit named Oreo, at her home and an empty animal hospital. Actor William McNamara recently shared on Instagram his efforts to rescue animals. He is working with the Eastwood Ranch Foundation to help evacuate various animals, including pigs, goats, peacocks, and horses, from difficult situations. The Los Angeles Equestrian Center is sheltering around 400 large animals, primarily horses. Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue has also relocated wild horses to safer areas.
